In 2011, BMW released 1 series M model. The car one of the most fun M models to drive and it quickly captured the hearts of BMW fans around the globe. The experts, baffled with the unorthodox naming convention, quickly declared that the car was a sort of experiment for BMW, to determine if there is a market for smaller version of M3. And it turns out they were right. German company announced to their dealers in the United States that 2016 BMW M2 can be expected soon. This time under the proper M badge, new corner killer from BMW is one of the most expected cars for the next year. Branded as a” compact luxury car” by the company, M2 should fill the gap between M235i and M4.
2016 BMW M2 Body
Recent spy shots show 2016 BMW M2 as a compact coupe with a redesigned front bumper and typical M series front grill. The car mostly resembles M235i coupe and considering the branding, it was the most likely candidate for the starting point. The complex aerodynamic system at front end has become a staple of M series and M2 will be no exception. On the rear end, car features lip spoiler and twin exhaust pipes with split bumper to accommodate them. One other thing that was distinguishable from the spy shots are huge vented braking discs, with blue painted calipers. This can give some indication as to how much power 2016 BMW M2 will have. M2 should be 200 to 300 pounds lighter than M235i, which will help with acceleration and handling.
Engine of 2016 BMW M2
The most likely candidate for the engine under the hood of 2016 BMW M2 is BMW’s S55 unit. This is the same engine found in M2’s bigger brothers, M3 and M4. Still, it would be too much to expect the same power. While S55 is quite capable of delivering 425 horse powers and 400 pound feet of torque, we won’t see those numbers in M2. Most likely the engine will be detuned to just under 400 horse powers, which will still be plenty, considering the weight difference. The transmission will be the same as in M3 and M4, either 6 speed manual or 7 speed dual clutch automatic.
Price and availability of 2016 M2
Even though 2016 BMW M2 is almost certain, BMW hasn’t announced any dates or prices. The latest M car could be unveiled in late 2015 or early 2016, maybe at the Detroit Motown Show. Price wise, M235i coupe costs $44,025, but since M2 represents the pinnacle of 2 series it will be pricier, but not as much as M4, which goes for $65,125. Logic says that 2016 BMW M2 will be priced somewhere around $55,000. At this price range new M2 will be more appealing to young people who can’t afford M4 and that is the demographic BMW is rather eager to win over. Considering how agile and fun to drive M2 is predicted to be, it would seem they are well on their way to accomplishing that.
