The VW Passat is quite a good family car, offering a good price to performance ratio as well as clean and fuel efficient diesel engines. What it was missing was a hybrid option. Well, good news because they just revealed that the 2015 Passat GTE will launch by the end of the year in Europe and in a bit more time in the US. The car is boasting a petrol engine coupled to an electric motor and it is offered in its own trim, meaning that it will also get unique equipment.
2015 Passat GTE Price
Price hasn’t been revealed to the public unfortunately but considering the other electric options on the market, we can expect at least $50,000 (or nearly 37.000 euro) for it, or even more when you add in the options. For the price you will get a hybrid that is capable of driving in a purely electric mode for nearly 31 miles, which is pretty much the same thing as the Volt. Take into account though that the mode of operation of the two is different.
The interior of the new Passat will be widely based on a top end model of the regular range, so expect leather upholstery, satellite navigation, dual zone automatic climate control as well as a premium audio system as standard. Options will probably include different seats that are much more comfortable and a better infotainment. The screen that is used for the infotainment system will also double as the screen that will show different information about the electric drivetrain.
Design wise, it is quite similar to the new 2015 Passat with a few minor changes. The front grille has been actually replaced in order to be more aerodynamic. The good thing about the new car is that it resembles more the CC than the Passat. The tail lights as well as the headlights now use LED as standard while the back bumper has a double exhaust system, for better looks. The main advantage over other hybrids is that it is also offered in a Variant form, so you will have plenty of space without needing to get a diesel.
The powertrain in the 2015 Passat GTE is a combination of petrol and electric. The petrol engine is a 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 that it is capable of providing up to 156 horsepower while the electric motor is producing 113 horsepower. The total combined power of the car is actually 215 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, being almost as powerful as the bi-turbo diesel. Fuel consumption is low at around 45 MPG on average. However, it also has an electric only mode in which the car can be used for around 31 miles without using any fuel.
2015 Passat GTE Performance is good too, being able to accelerate to 60 MPH in under 8 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of 133 MPH, being even faster than the Tesla S.
